Weekend in Bandung

When B told me that he had two tickets to Bandung and he was whisking me off for a shopping and dining vacation in exactly one week, I was more worried rather than happy! I was in the midst of a huge translation job, which was still ongoing at the time B surprised me with this trip. Despite working on it for the past two weeks, I was still nowhere near done, and with my client bugging me about it practically every day, I did not feel like it was the perfect vacation moment for me; I'd be too distracted thinking about unfinished business at home.

I was reluctant to leave my home office unattended but B assured me that a weekend of shopping and dining was exactly what we needed to get our mind of things after all that has happened to us this year. Moreover, he too needed to release some steam after working so hard himself and so, that was how we ended up in Bandung one fine weekend! We figured we'd turn it into a typical weekend of shopping and dining, which is how we usually spend our weekend here. The only difference was that we had to take a plane to get to our shopping destination! ;)

The day before our flight, I started feeling sick. I had a headache, my nose was acting up even worse than usual and I was feeling cold throughout the day, despite the sun shining brightly outside. The fact that I was working until the very last minute didn't help either. We still had to pack and send our kitties to the Pet Hotel so I got through the day by popping Panadols, which worked but was not enough to help me regain my strength fully. I didn't sleep the night before for fear of missing our flight which was at 9.50am so after I finally finished packing, I took an early shower at 6am and got ready for our trip!

It was my first Air Asia flight, so I was quite apprehensive at what to expect. Fortunately, everything turned out okay but I had a very uncomfortable flight due to my cold, and though it was a mere two hours to reach our destination, I felt like it was more than that. By the time we reached Bandung, I was feeling really sick and all I wanted to do was to get to our hotel and take a nice hot bath before I could even think of doing any exploring.

We got a cab at the airport to take us to the Grand Preanger Hotel and were told that it would cost us 40,000 Rupiah (Rp). I was glad to finally reach our hotel but had a complete change of mood when the cab driver shortchanged us of 5,000 Rp for this journey. Taking it as a one-off "oversight" by the cab driver, we decided not to make a fuss. I was also sneezing non-stop by then so there was no time to argue with the cab driver. Since we arrived at the hotel 1 1/2 hours before check-in time, we were told that we had to wait for our room, which did not bode well with me at all. I was already very grumpy (sorry love!) from my uncomfortable flight, my non-stop sneezing and from being cheated by the cab driver and was about to resign myself to a miserable wait when B told me that he somehow managed to get a room for us earlier and within 15 minutes we were escorted to our room.

Grand Preanger Hotel

We didn't do much on our first day in Bandung. After we freshened up in our hotel room, we had our welcome drink at the hotel lounge before taking a cab from the hotel to visit several factory outlets. I was excited to see just how much shopping I'd end up with but was surprised to find myself not shopping till I drop! Perhaps it was my cold and the lack of sleep, but I was in no mood for shopping that first day.

Bandung weather was surprisingly cooler compared to KL so walking the streets of Bandung was a delight. I didn't have much appetite to eat however, and though B got a taste of the durian ice-cream which seemed to be in abundance everywhere, my blocked nose did not permit me to
really savour the yummy ice-cream! :(

Factory Outlets we visited on Day 1

We returned to our hotel early and after a simple dinner, fell asleep at 6.30pm! I guess all the traveling and my lack of sleep days before the trip finally took its toll on me. This actually turned out great, because the next day I was up and dressed for breakfast by 8am, a major accomplishment for me. I was feeling much better than yesterday and though still feverish, I was not going to let my cold keep me back from rocking the streets of Bandung! ;)

The early bird all ready for breakfast!

A little chess before we head out shopping

Finally, we're good to go...waiting for our ride to take us on our shopping spree!

Our ride for the day

We decided to hire a driver to take us to all the places we wanted to go. It cost us 50,000 Rp to get to our first destination and following that, we would be charged an hourly rate. Our driver was friendly and extremely polite. He took us to wherever we wanted to go and suggested famous local attractions to visit. Our first stop was a Batik boutique but we did not buy anything much there as the prices were rather high in this particular home boutique he took us to. Plus, both B and I are not huge batik fans.

The rest of the day was spent shopping at the remaining Factory Outlets on our list, while our driver waited for us outside. He'd pounce on us as soon as he sees us coming out, immediately taking our shopping bags from us to put inside the car. At one of our stops, he had to wait for almost 2 hours in the hot sun while we did our shopping! He was paid handsomely for his services though and by the time he sent us back to the hotel he was 450,000 Rp richer! :)

Told ya I didn't shop much!

Stocking up on the famous Bandung Brownies

Later, B and I both agreed that our favourite shopping spot in Bandung was the Cihampalas Walk and Rumah Mode. I think I did most of my shopping there where I found several favourite brands like Esprit, Zara, Calvin Klein and Guess at great low prices. I was however, disappointed that I did not find any Victoria's Secret items for sale in any of the Factory Outlets we visited. Before my trip, I had made a mental note to myself to check out Farah's Bandung post to find out where she got her Victoria's Secret stuff from, but it was a hectic week for me and in my haste, completely forgot to do so. I remembered Farah mentioning that she had a blast grabbing all the VS stuff she could find in her size but unfortunately, there was no grabbing for me that day! :(

Taking a break after shopping at Rumah Mode

On our last night in Bandung we had a relaxing cosy buffet dinner in the hotel, served al fresco on the terrace, with a band for entertainment. Though her vocal prowess did not impress me much, the singer did sing some of my favourite Indonesian songs so that was cool. The food was just okay but once again, I have to blame my lack of appetite in Bandung on my not being 100% well!

Dinner on our last night in Bandung

Our last cab ride back to the airport was smooth and speedy but we were upset once again when the cab driver demanded 100,000 Rp for the ride instead of the 40,000 Rp initially quoted. It was a good thing we still had some Rupiah with us and since we didn't want to leave on a bad note, we paid the driver and proceeded to check-in our luggage, where we discovered we had to pay more service charge. By the time we paid all the stuff needed paying, we were down to about 75,000 Rp. While discussing what to do with the remaining cash, an air stewardess came running up to us, asking if we'd prefer to sit in the Executive Lounge while waiting for our flight. It would cost us 30,000 Rp per person but we would be seated in a comfy room with free food and drinks to snack on instead of being stuck in the noisy, crowded airport. You could also get a foot massage if you like, for an additional cost of course! It sounded like a pretty good deal so that's where we were until boarding time. :)

Despite my cold while in Bandung, we tried to make the best of our trip. Though exhausted from our shopping weekend, we were nonetheless happy that we got to experience the better part of Bandung before we flew back home. To my Bandung friends Trinity and MXY, I'm sorry our paths did not cross during this vacation, but I am sure there will be another opportunity for us to visit Bandung again. Until then, thank you for having us in your lovely city. I had a blast and Mariuca will definitely be back! :)

Hiya dearie
Wah sorry to hear that you were able to shop till you drop in Bandung coz of your cold. It was a good thing though you were still able to enjoy yourself and get some shopping done..

Kira ok lah tu.. a weekend in Bandung as oppose to a weekend in KL kan??

Hmm.. unfortunately taxi's driver in indon are like that lah.. we try to squeeze you.. i know coz i was in JKT and we had a local guide and just coz the driver know we were not local also wanted to argue with the guide for more money.. lucky the guide was persistent so the driver did not get anything extra!!

Anyway.. great pictures, great story and overall fantastic post.. Feel like I was there with you :)

Hugs!!

Mariuca July 28, 2008 3:44 AM

Hola LJ! Ah tu la, it was really upsetting actually, cause nak jalan byk pun tak larat, I was tired from all the sneezing and nose blowing! Plus, my eyes were watery most of the time, so nak shopping pun tak selesa! But anyway, I forced myself to shop la, better to get some done than nothing at all! ;)

Sigh...some more we had to happily announce to both cab drivers that yeah, we all baru first time datang sini, lagi la think we're gullible yeah? The second incident sakit hati jugak cause the jump from 40,000 to 100,000 was ridic! Anyway, it's okay, halalkan. :)

Glad u enjoyed the post sweetie, I'm glad I finally got it out even though lambat.

Mariuca July 28, 2008 3:47 AM

DId I read 'Mariuca will definitely be back' ? LOL See, bandung has a charm (well, crap! it's shopping) LOL I see you did go to the 'must go' factory outlets, my favourites are Rumah Mode, Stamp and Heritage. Don't they have the best brands to shop for less? :) My husband has officially announced that Bandung will be our yearly stop before hari raya.

eastcoastlife July 28, 2008 3:21 PM

Wah!! Quite a good amount of things you bought! I love shopping and eating in Bandung.

Too bad you weren't feeling well. I don't like to travel when I'm sick too.

That was quite a lot you had to pay for a cab to the airport.

emilayusof July 28, 2008 4:10 PM

Haha I say a OK!! Will bug, bug and bug him until he takes me there lar!!

Mariuca July 28, 2008 4:57 PM

Mariuca July 28, 2008 5:07 PM

LJ!!! GP stres gils ni! ;) Am so busy with my work, I really can't wait for this project to be over. Bangun pagi je stress, not that I bangun pagi la he he! Check email je stress, and with the connection so slow past few days, I have not been completing my 300 drops or "experimenting" much! Bear with me dearie, and I'll get back to experimenting really soon yeah? :):):)

Oh thanks la for noticing my Coach bagasi ha ha ha!! Beli kat Bandung obviously! I wanted an LV one, which was white in colour and so pretty but that didn't have any straps, more like a clutch bag. So I took this one instead, which I also love!! I bought one bagasi only cause only loved the LV one and this one right here! ;)

Mariuca July 28, 2008 5:12 PM

Farah! I went back to ur post and saw u spent 4 days in bandung! Baru la cukup kan? 2 days (actually 1 day for me cause the first day tak kira since I was sick), tak cukup. In fact, when at the immigration clearance at the airport, the bapak there asked how many days did we stay in Bandung, and I said 2 days only... and he gave me a shocked expression like what's wrong with this girl, 2 days mana cukup? LOL! :):):)

Mariuca July 28, 2008 5:14 PM

ECL! Really? I was upset cause I thought I didn't shop enough ha ha ha! Felt like so sikit my shopping bags lolz... :)

Oh tell me abt the cab fare! Twice some more kena tipu aiyo!! :(

LadyJava July 28, 2008 5:17 PM

No problems dearie.. still a lot more to go is it your work.. poor thing.. I'll ask you take it easy but on second thought better not eh??

Yelah.. I saw the handbag only and I feel like love.. cantik lah...

Ok.. here to bring you more flowers for your office and some hot soup also ok :)

Mariuca July 28, 2008 5:17 PM

Hi Nick! Aiyo busy la me!! Sigh, you know how it is, agency bugging me every day to hurry up, so stress la right now. Only managed to get this post out yesterday! ;)

Glad to share the pics and Bandung with you here, have u ever been there? Maybe u and wifey can go for a short vakasi one weekend. It would make a nice getaway and it's not that expensive too! :):):)

Mariuca July 28, 2008 5:20 PM

Oh thanks Debbie, you're so sweet to check in on me. It comes and it goes and I know u're right abt that clinic trip. Need to tear myself away from my work and just got see the doc one and for all! ;)

Mariuca July 28, 2008 5:23 PM

LJ! The soto does look delish, but taste not so much la! It was served with rice, some acar, keropok and sambal belacan. I'd much prefer it with the cili padi blend in kicap, like the usual soto we eat here. Plus, I mostly had the soup cause couldn't taste anything with my blocked nose, so it was just okay for me actually lolz.... I did enjoy my coffee drinks though - sejuk and sweet! :):):)

Anonymous,  July 28, 2008 5:26 PM

enak kan brownies bandung ..emmmm

Mariuca July 28, 2008 5:27 PM

MEOW Sushi!! Oh thanks for noticing our football shirts ha ha ha!! I didn't even realize we both wore EURO that day lolz! ;)

YAY! I'm happy I got to bring back Bandung to u and perhaps ul get a chance to visit there one day too. The brownies are really YUMMY! I bought the baked brownies and the steamed brownies, both are equally delicious. They go really well with black coffee! :):):)

Mariuca July 28, 2008 5:29 PM

Emila, some more not so expense! Tukar RM1k terus jadi jutawan kah kah kah! B and I were happy being millionaires for the day lolz! :):):)

Stres ni, I haven't visited ur blog. Am sure Jean is happily on top now! Have to do my work first, then I shall hop over see what is going on over there! ;)

LadyJava July 28, 2008 5:29 PM

hehehhe.. blocked nose pun minum something cold?? lolzz...

Too bad on the soto.. it looks good though...hehhe..

Mariuca July 28, 2008 5:33 PM

Ha ha ha you feel like love LJ? Cute la u! Thanks for the flowers dearie, they are making my office smell really sweet now! Campur dengan my perfume gallery...woo hoo! :)

Yeah, every time I feel like it's ending, the agency sends me more files! And then mintak asap, stressing me out further. Also have to juggle other clients, so it's a whole lotta action and multitasking goin on here! ;)

Mariuca July 28, 2008 5:34 PM

YUM!!! Memang enak Bono, I beli byk, sila lah makan. He he he!

Btw, are u also from Bandung? :):):)

Mariuca July 28, 2008 5:36 PM

LJ, that was the only thing I had appetite for actually. Sweet stuff and liquids, things that didn't need chewing lolz!

Yup, too bad cause soto is actually my fave! :)

LadyJava July 28, 2008 5:44 PM

ok.. then soup is good for you.. just ask B to get you more soupy stuff ok..

Jean, this ice cream, got fresh durians added, so it was quite nice! Can taste the durian, which was sweet too!

The prices are very low Jean, but for me, I gotta really search for the stuff I like! He he, but there will definitely be something for everyone so you won't come home empty-handed! :)

Oh the brownies are really YUM! So moist and chocolatey, so it was worth it for me to bring home several boxes lol!

Sushi July 29, 2008 8:03 AM

Hola GP, never heard of steamed brownie, interesting... you think you didn't shop enough with all those bags? I know what's like to have a cotton mouth, especially when you wanna try some nice ice cream. Mommy remembers the durian fruit when she visited south east Asia. She didn't have a chance to visit Indonesia but she would love to go and if she goes one day, she'll include the city of flowers in the itinerary. Loved all your pics(the hotel was fab!) Woofies.

emilayusof July 29, 2008 9:49 AM

Mariuca July 29, 2008 3:36 PM

Yay, thanks Janice! I agree, if I didn't rest on the first day, for sure I wouldn't be happily shopping away the next day LOL! Oh me too a tad ticked off abt the taxi thingy, but when I was on my Singapore trip, the cabs there were excellent! :):):)

He he, in the last picture here, I was wearing all the stuff I bought, including the bag LOL! Got some Esprit and Guess tops, a couple of jeans for B and me, some stuff from Banana Republic, my Coach bag (which I love!) and some other things. No perfumes though cause there was none I fancied. And the minis were limited.

Oh and of course bought some food stuff as well like the Bandung Brownies! ;)

Jean Chia aka Ms.Yummy~licious July 31, 2008 11:47 AM

hi marzie, the durian ice-cream sounds not bad after all. I love cold durians, so this ice cream might just work for me! :)

oh, hearing you said so makes me wanna shop there lar! Bandung was never the place we would visit. But yr trip sounded like fun, and i think if next time AirAsia got cheap fare to bandung, me & martin will consider grabbing it! :)

i love moist chocolatey brownies...yumm... oh the thought of sinking my teeth on these brownies just makes me salivate lar! :P

soto is my fave too, marzie! last time, i dont know how to eat it, as in i've nvr order such dish outside. I only started eating soto when mart's maid cook it at home. It was soto java, and the soup is abit greenies, and yellowish color because of the kencur. oh, it's really yummy, the best soto i've ever tasted. :)

me & mart love it so much, that we asked mart's maid for the recipe. She gave me a list of ingredients but did not mention how much i need to put them. ?? so i gotta experiement myself lor!! will try to make it once i've buy all the ingredients. :)

Mariuca August 01, 2008 3:26 PM

Hello Jean! I think u will love the durian ice cream, it was really tasty and like I said, can taste the fruit itself. I think got 2 pieces inside, so just nice for one person! :)

YUM! I love soto also la, you are really making me crave for it now! Soto Java I love too! But always must have the begedil and cili padi blend, or not it just won't be soto kan? I hope ur soto turns out nice, then can share the recipe. :)

Bandung is a great place for u to take a short break and enjoy some shopping! And it's really not that pricey, with AirAsia, so ....what are u waiting for woman? :):):)

The hotel you stayed in looks spectacular. And I am soooooooooooo drooling over the food. Jealous!!!

Thanks for sharing the pics of you and your B with us!! Love to see peoples travelling experiences.

p/s: my son saw your pic near the plane and said, "Mommy, why your friend going up??" I said "Up where?" He asked "Why aunty friend going up in the sky?" Then i said "She going for holiday"

Then he slumps his shoulders and said, "Aww.. why not bring meeee??" LOL!
